Yoga is a lifelong practice. We return to the mat, the breath, and the movement again and again, with the desire to define, refine, inform, reform, and grow a body capacious and stable enough to hold a big mind and a great life. Somewhere along the way, what we receive begins to ask to be given back in our own form. Many of us find the desire to teach our practice, to share what we have spent years and decades exploring on our own mats. At a certain point, we want to make something new and share it!
Inspired by the three-part structure of Katonah practice, we will braid this incubator through three facets:
- Body: home practices, restorative setting up one’s own circumstances and organizing one’s resources and vision (online)
- Mind: deep diving into theory, maps, myths, and metaphors
- Spirit: playing together, getting team spirit, being in community, getting in touch with hands-on adjustments and time well spent together
The result of this braid is the Fourth Nature!
This mentorship is a container for what we want to grow from the spring equinox through the summer solstice. It is a three-month incubator for those who love the practice and are ready to make something new, step into it, and grow the seed of their communal vision. That seed might be a weekly class that finally comes together, a workshop that has lived in a notebook for years, a retreat, or a piece of writing that wants to find its readers. This is a season of extended study and self-exploration in the art of practice and the craft of teaching, and we accompany you through the long, uneven, deeply rewarding work of bringing your project into the world.
The training draws on Dages and Josie’s decades of teaching and on the living transmission of Katonah Yoga as it has been developed and shared by Nevine Michaan.
Each participant will develop a project over the course of the mentorship. For teachers, it might look like practice teaching and receiving feedback, building syllabi and sequencing across weeks rather than single classes, shaping the architecture of a workshop or retreat, and continuing the self-inquiry that keeps a teacher’s offering alive rather than rehearsed. Others might focus on projects outside of a yoga framework, or on tuning up their own practices. The structure builds momentum through ongoing workshops, classes, small-group work, and buddy work designed to make one’s project real and sustainable.
First nature is what we inherited; second nature is what we have trained; third nature is how we do it; fourth is what we make of it!
